Hello 2017: Goals, dreams & expectations

Can you believe it?! 1st of January 2017, already! Well, that sprung up on me super quick, but I guess introductions are in order. Hello 2017, nice to finally see you! This year I have so many exciting things planned that I've been dreaming about for years, and there are some new idea's at the forefront of my brain too. I'm so excited to get things moving, kick my resolutions into gear and let this year rock!

There's something about the new year and the motivation to make myself a better, more rounded person that I love! I don't get why people hate so much on the 'New year, new me' trend. I get it, you shouldn't wait until the 1st January to make a difference in your life, however, there's something about fresh starts that make it a more exciting and attainable thing. Plus, the inspiration and buzz of everybody working together is incredible.

2016 was a crazy year. I got a new job. Travelled, a lot. Met a bunch of incredible people from the Blogging community which in turn left incredible friendships. Completely overhauled the design of my blog. Then said blog got nominated for the UK Blog Awards! Definitely, the most crazy, fulfilling and energizing year I've experienced.

But 2017. Well, 2017 is going to be something, so much more!

I'm taking the plunge and finally quitting my job to go traveling

Where resolutions are concerned, I don't think this counts per se. I mean, I've booked my outbound flights already, so going traveling in 2017 is pretty much a done deal. No take backsies, unless I fancy losing all the money I've invested. Which I most certainly do not. So I guess quitting my job is something set in stone because my flights are one-way tickets which leave in just 3 months time! Eek, scary.

I've been working in retail for 6 years, mostly alongside education and as much as I love my new position, it's not what I want to be doing 5 years time. When I finished University a year ago, it was a safe and quick way into full-time employment and since then I've lost all motivation to search for new career opportunities. I was comfortable and earning money, so why did I need to? But I do need to, I'll never grow staying in the same place for so long. And I'll never get to do what I love whilst working in retail. So pulling that final thread and cutting ties is the first big thing happening this year!

Be more confident and daring with my fashion choices

I am surrounded by bloggers and friends who have such interesting, beautiful & unique sense in fashion. Something which I aspire my own wardrobe to be like. I spent 60% of my free time in 2016 scrolling through Pinterest staring at outfits which I love and the remaining 40%, on ways I can recreate them at a fraction of the budget. But nine out of ten times, I quit before payment for fear of not being 'cool enough'.

I've become complacent in my fashion choices. I know what I think looks good but also what is safe and safe is as far as my confidence stretched last year! This year I want to try harder to interject interest and uniqueness into my wardrobe. To be more confident in trying new things and not afraid to fail for something to not work. Success doesn't come from never having failed!

Launch my print shop

I've always been so in love with typography and graphic print. I studied Fine Art at University but almost always ended up creating something print and media-themed. I've always dreamed of producing and selling my own work. Work I've made for myself but others (thankfully) seem to enjoy too. I want to be my own boss one day (probably not this year, but soon) and a Graphic artist would be my first choice for doing that!

I've got an immense back log of tests and developments of which final products are just around the corner and I'm really excited to share those with you! Specifically in the form of my own online shop. Whether that's a completely ridiculous idea considering I leave to travel in March and am hoping to to be gone for most of the year, I don't know! But I really, really hope it's not.

Instagram Game? What Instagram game?

I suck at Instagram. Uploading daily seems like such a chore and sticking to a 'theme'. Impossible! My style changes all the time. You'll probably notice this with my prints. It was something I struggled with a lot a University. Most artists develop a style and/or medium which is noticeably, 'theirs'. Me, I just love to have a bit of fun and try everything. Which is why Instagram 'themes' never seem to work for me! It's so demotivating when there's such impeccable competition and incredible stigma to be a certain way on Instagram!

This year I want to stop feeling the pressure to post certain types of photo's, which look a certain way, at certain times of the day, and every single day! I want to find the fun in Instagram and photography again. Find followers who are there because they enjoy what I post and not because it fits with the stereotype.

Hit 2000 followers

Numbers aren't everything and they're most certainly not a priority. But numbers mean readers and readers mean I'm that one step closer to being my own Girl Boss like I dream to be!

Whilst having fun and enjoying what I'm doing is why I started and why I want to continue blogging, improving my reader base would be the cherry on the cake this year. Somehow, in the last 3 months of 2016, I grew 700+ followers on Twitter. I'm not sure how or why it happened but the friends, fun, and opportunities it's providing me is all the more to keep it going! But it's also why it's the last goal on my list this year. It's not priority, but would be absolutely incredible if it happened!

For those of you who have been reading for a while, thank you so much for the support last year. To those of you who nominated/voted for me in the UK Blog Awards, I can never thank you enough! To those of you who are new here, hello, I'm Melissa, I hope you enjoy your time here. I hope every single one of you, have an absolutely incredible year, I can't wait to see what you accomplish and the fun you have doing it!

Love always,
Melissa

  2. The launch of your print shop sounds really exciting, I can't wait to see it all come together this year.
As for the Instagram game, I have given up on that so many times I don't even know where to go with it anymore.
